The work is a part of a series of objects constructed from the premodern cleaning tools of Slovenia’s countryside everyday in a way that transforms them from simple tools to luxurious goods. The object of cleaning has always been associated with either the female sex or the lower class. Twisting their forms and materialities allows for subversion of their traditional symbolic meaning into contemporary notions of gender roles, class struggle and life aesthetics. The rug beater was commonly used to beat childrend’s buttocks whilst the soft mattress harnesses the symbolic power of the bedroom as the place of sexual (un)freedom.
